This afternoon I stepped away from my computer and work to take a break and make some lunch.

I remembered the brussel sprouts waiting for me in the fridge, so I turned on the oven and pulled out a cutting board to prepare them for roasting.

That’s when I became inspired to photograph them.

As I took in the kitchen preparing and photographing those little green brussel sprouts, I realized something –

It was quiet. I mean REALLY quiet.

I had been so busy creating that I wasn’t even cognizant of it at first.  But it struck me as I stood in the warm sunlight of the kitchen; my home was empty and quiet. I breathed in the contentment of that moment.

Sometimes I forget just how powerful and healing the quiet can be. When there is no TV, no music, no family members talking and most of all – no noise in my head of what needs to get done, where I should be, what is next, who needs to be where. Just   QUIET.

I prepared the brussel sprouts for the oven by marinating them in a couple table spoons of olive oil, some Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper.

They roast in the over at 400 degrees for about 30 to 40 minutes.  It’s ironic, I've gone from swearing I would never eat brussel sprouts – ever again, to loving the smell of them roasting in the oven.

They end up dark and crunchy outside, flavored by the salt and pepper and soft on the inside with a more mild taste when roasted long enough.

Within the hour I was back to work, the noise in my head turned  back up  to full, albeit I longed for more of those yummy little balls of crunchy green. I’m telling you, it’s a serious new love affair! I actually make a conscious choice to BUY brussel sprouts!

Brussel Sprouts?
Seriously, I’m not in my right mind.
But I just want MORE!

Beautiful food photos! I just tried a brussel sprout for the first time like a month ago...roasted in the oven. Not bad! What a nice quiet moment. I could use more of them! :)

You may have just inspired me to try brussel sprouts. And I'm a little shocked to admit that. :)

Michelle, probably not as shocked as I am that I've now made them [on purpose] three times!

Naomi, I know, huh! Who knew they could be so tasty!

I'm telling you, it's an odd phenomenon. The more I eat roasted brussel sprouts, the more I WANT.

I always hated them as a child-- because my mom boiled them. Blech! Mushy, bland, saltless brussels sprouts are horrible. But when I discovered roasting and sauteeing them and the way they carmelize and crisp, I am now a believer. My whole family is nuts over them, actually.

Okay, these look yummy. I've only had brussels sprouts a few times and each time they were just okay. Might have to try them this way!!

Oh, goodness! I'm so glad to have gotten connected to you! Thanks for all the nice comments tonight on my blog. And when I clicked over to yours and saw Brussels sprouts, well, I feel like it's fate that we've gotten connected. They are my new favorite veggie! I'm also partial to little boys with H names... We'll have to get together some time!

when we were little my brother and i were on a t.v gameshow called "kidstreet". one of the questions that we had to match was "what is the one food you will not eat?" we got it right by both of us answering "brussel sprouts" hahaha.

now, i had to tell that story to tell you how passionately i dislike them...but seriously, your images make me want to try them. what?!?! i never thought to roast them. the ones we had when we were little were all soggy and gross. i'm gonna try them...i can't believe i'm actually going to BUY brussel sprouts!

Okay, I'm buying brussels sprouts tomorrow and making them this week. You made them sound so good. I'll let you know.

Funny, you found quiet in a sprout...hehehe.

But how do they taste cooked like that? I like them boiled a bit with butter on top or sauted with bacon. Your method just seems like brussel sprouts.

Melody, LOL - I can't stand them boiled! I love the flavor of these, since they're marinated in olive oil kosher salt and cracked pepper they have a nice crunchy roasted flavor that precedes and mixes with the soft brussel sprout toning down it's normally sharp, unpleasant taste.

But may have to try them sauteed with bacon some day!

YUM! I love brussel sprouts! And these look delicious with the crunchy outer layer. I may have to try that.
Isn't the quiet the best?! I'm sitting here right now and it's perfectly quiet. Just me typing and the fridge humming.
I was going to reply to a comment you left me, but I don't think I have your email address.
